FIFA Museum celebrates Jorge Campos’ style and legacy with iconic 1994 shirt
On the 31st anniversary of Mexico’s 2–1 victory over the Republic of Ireland at the 1994 FIFA World Cup™, the FIFA Museum is celebrating the legacy of Jorge Campos with the exhibition of an original Mexico goalkeeper shirt from the same year. The vibrant jersey, designed by Campos himself, is on display in the Football Fever exhibition space where football meets pop culture, including fashion.
Jorge Campos, who earned 130 caps for Mexico and appeared at three FIFA World Cups™, was known for his acrobatic style of goalkeeping, unorthodox positioning, and ability to play as both goalkeeper and striker during his club career, scoring 14 league goals in a single season. Standing at 1.70 metres tall, he defied conventional expectations for his position through agility, anticipation, and versatility. 31 years ago, on 24 June 1994, in a group-stage match against the Republic of Ireland, Campos delivered one of his most memorable performances that contributed to Mexico’s 2–1 victory, including a notable reflex save in the 38th minute that kept the game level at a crucial moment.
Campos spent most of his club career in Mexico with teams like UNAM Pumas, Atlante, Cruz Azul, Tigres UANL, and Puebla, while also appearing in the United States for LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire. While primarily a goalkeeper, he also featured as a striker at club level and scored 35 career goals. His dual-role scoring exploits reinforced his reputation as one of football’s most uniquely versatile players.
Central to Campos’ legacy is his unmistakable sense of style. The shirt on display at the FIFA Museum in Zurich exemplifies his approach to self-expression: bold, bright, and unmistakably personal. Inspired by the surf culture of his native Acapulco, Campos famously designed many of his own kits, which helped launch a new era of football fashion. As Campos once told Bolavip Mexico, “I wanted to feel comfortable, to wear something I liked and that reminded me of surfing in Acapulco, on the beach.”
Football Fever runs at the FIFA Museum in Zurich until 31 August 2025.
